Dr. Seth Benzell: Which Jobs Scale and Why?

You're invited to the final talk in the Economics Department Seminar Series this Friday, April 25, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in SSPA-204.

Dr. Seth Benzell, Assistant Professor of Economics at Chapman University, will present "Which Jobs Scale and Why?"

Dr. Benzell's talk aims to uncover which specific tasks within an organization are most likely to improve the productivity of a company and its relation to the overall costs of the firm. Specifically, he finds that the median worker in a large company gets paid more for the same job when compared to a worker in a small organization. This is particularly the case for managerial or more abstract tasks, whereas wages are more comparable to across companies where tasks are routine or manual. He will also provide some interesting insight behind these findings. Please see the abstract below for more details.

Dr. Benzell earned his PhD in Economics from Boston University in 2017 and has published several articles across multiple disciplines. He is also a fellow of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and the Stanford HAI Digital Economy Lab. His research is centered around the economics of digitization which includes automation, networks and information systems.
