Tacos in the Rain, Tequilas at the Pub - Tracing the Rise of Mexican Food in Ireland
The departments of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies; Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies; Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures; and Sociology invite you and your students to "Tacos in the Rain, Tequilas at the Pub - Tracing the Rise of Mexican Food in Ireland," a lecture and discussion on Cinco de Mayo (Monday, May 5) at Anatol Center, 5-7pm.
"Tacos in the Rain, Tequilas at the Pub" is a presentation by Dr. Catherine Leen, scholar of Latin American and Chicana/o film and culture, from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Leen discusses the cultural, political, and social forces behind the recent wave of Mexican food and culture in Ireland. Come learn about how and why Mexican food has crossed the Atlantic and taken hold on the Emerald Isle, and what these cultural encounters teach us about migration, citizenship, and transatlantic relations between Mexico, the US border region, and modern Ireland.
The lecture by Dr. Catherine Leen will be followed by a conversation with Dr. Melissa Hidalgo, WGSS lecturer and author of the first article about Mexican food in Ireland for L.A. Taco in 2022.
Dr. Hidalgo met Dr. Leen in Ireland through the Fulbright Scholar network, years after Dr. Leen completed a Fulbright in Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara in 2008. They began collaborating on this project nearly a decade ago, when Dr. Hidalgo completed a Fulbright fellowship at the University of Limerick, Ireland (2016-2017). Dr. Leen and Dr. Hidalgo have since co-written an article, “Why is Mexican food so popular in Ireland?” for the Irish national news outlet, RTE Brainstorm, and co-produced a podcast, From Potatoes to Tacos: How Mexican Food is Making Waves in Ireland, funded by the Irish Fulbright Alumni Association.
This event is generously supported by: CLA Scholarly Intersections Grant; the Departments of WGSS, CHLS, RGRLL, and SOC; and LBS Financial Credit Union ֳǹ 75th Anniversary grant.
