Funded Opportunities for Students

This is a collection of grants, fellowships, and other funded opportunities in areas that may be of interest to Linguistics students, such as languages, international studies, public service, law, education and research. 

First Year Onward

International / language study

  • : 3 to 6-week academic and cultural summer programs for freshmen and sophomores. Deadline: late February/ early March.
  • : Summer, semester, and year-long study in regions critical to US national security. Requires 1-year commitment to federal government employment after graduation (can be deferred). Deadline: mid-January.
  • Funds intensive summer language study in countries where critical languages related to national security are spoken (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean etc…). Deadline: mid-November
  • : Funding for study abroad and internships abroad for students receiving Pell Grants. Deadlines: early October for Spring programs; early March for Summer, Fall or Academic Year programs.
  • : CBCF Congressional Black Caucus Kakehashi Project: Paid 10-day study abroad in Japan. Deadline: varies

Public service

Sophomore Year

International / language study

  • Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP): 1-year experience in research with ֳǹ faculty.

  • : Summer, semester, and year-long study in regions critical to US national security. Requires 1-year commitment to federal government employment after graduation (can be deferred). Deadline: mid-January.
  • Funds intensive summer language study in countries where critical languages related to national security are spoken (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean etc…). Deadline: mid-November

Public Service

  • : $30,000 for graduate or professional school for juniors demonstrating commitment to impact through public service, academic promise, and leadership. Deadline: mid-November.
  • : 5-week summer community-based research on resisting intolerance and exploring models of action to remedy injustice in either Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Detroit, Sarajevo, or Warsaw. Deadline: early January.

  • : 7-week Junior Summer Institute (JSI) before senior year equips fellows to succeed in Masters of joint degrees, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs. Deadline: early November.

Senior Year, Graduate or Alumni

Graduate School             

  • : Fellowship for immigrants or children of immigrants to attend graduate school. Deadline: Nov 1.

Graduate School Abroad              

  • : Two or more years’ graduate study at Oxford University in all fields. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential in their fields, and the will to “fight the world’s fight.” Deadline: August 1.
  • : Two years of graduate study in the UK in all fields. Deadline: August 1.
  • : One year of post-graduate study in Ireland/Northern Ireland in all fields. There are three selection criteria: scholarship, leadership, and sustained commitment to public service. Deadline: August 1.
  • : Postgraduate degrees at Cambridge University in all fields. Applicants must show evidence of commitment to improving the lives of others. Deadline: mid-October, later for non-US citizens.
  • : One year Master’s program (in English) at Tsinghua University in Beijing with a concentration in International Affairs, Economics and Business, or Public Policy for future leaders in various fields. Deadline: August 1
  • : Paid 1-year scholarship to complete a Masters in the UK on any subject. Deadline: November.

International / language study
